I've just discovered and put to use a good new feature of the latest version of itunes. It's the new "album artist" category, and seems to be made for jazz fans. Before, albums like "Johne Coltrane and Kenny Burrell" presented a problem. Is it a Kenny Burrell album or John Coltrane album? If I wanted to do a smart playlist/search for EVERYTHING of Kenny Burrell, this album wouldn't come up if I had it under filed under Coltrane as the "artist". Now I can list KB under "Album artist" and using boolean searches on a smart playlist, can easily come up with a playlist which includes this. This is also especially useful for artists who did a majority of their recordings under other people's names, as sidemen. Ron Carter for instance. This has made it easier to find and listen to recordings of my favorite musicians that would otherwise have been easily overlooked. Hope this makes sense, I just wanted to give a heads up to you jazz listeners out there.
Now they just need to add a feature that allows for MULTIPLE album artists. What to do with a supergroup album like "Kind of Blue?"
peace

Serves well for Rap music, too --
There are lots of rekkids where cats do "guest spots" on recordings led by their peers.
