Re: big bands?
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 6:51 AM.....closer to this end of the 20th century...Mingus...Dewey Redmond(father of Joshua)....Lou Tabaken/Toshio Akioshi.....Gerry Mulligan....
I see at this point in the music's history putting together a big band as a technical and financial challenge...almost like a goal aside from the music..that more musicians will persue for its' own sake..and I am more confident that the lure of chasing down charts and figuring out how to book these bands will keep the form alive and well for another decade. -

Re: big bands?
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 8:46 AMjaco pastorius put together a big band that was pretty swinging... check out "invitation" (live record.)
there's also strange hybrids going on these days, too such as dakah hiphop orchestra (jazz/funk/hiphop/other.) i'm sure there's others, but they are the first that come to mind.
lew tabackin & toshiko akioshi have kept a big band rolling for a while now. as hinted at earlier, that's quite a feat.

Re: big bands?
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 8:41 PMI've been catching up with the Dave Holland Big Band recently, which I really like. Some consider it as more of a quartet with more horns, but it sounds like a modern big band to me. If you like anything Holland has been involved with (I know him mostly Kenny Wheeler and a couple ECM albums), I recommend it.
Other names to throw out there: Tom Kubis, Bob Mintzer, Woody Herman, Matt Catingub .... I consider these more like "college" big bands gone pro, but that's probably just me.
Have fun. -

most big band stuff is really just orchestrated small group stuff anyway...

he's also played with a couple of obscure guys you prolly never heard of: miles davis & pat metheny...

well, without having been in a college jazz band i wouldn't know who tom kubis was, but i think i knew mintzer through being a sideman. don't forget don sebesky! dunno if he did the big band thing live, but he did a lot of arranging for cti (creed taylor industries--60s & 70s "smooth jazz" label with a lot of heavyweights on the sessions) and college bands play a lot of his charts. -

Re: big bands?
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 6:28 AM....well, the Miles Davis tribe never seems to have any interest, lately. Kinda like Bach being overlooked by euroclassistists. Fuss!
