I just added Freddie Hubbard's album "Red Clay" to my mix last night. The last time I heard this cut was back in high school which has been over twenty years ago. I just can't enough of how the cut "Red Clay" builds up and soaks you in. Plus, I just like long tunes like this one.
I'm wondering who else comes close to Hubbard's style?

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Sat, July 30, 2005 - 9:40 PMI added Duke Ellington's Oscalypso, from the album Piano Duets: Great Times!, this week -- beautiful.
As for Freddie Hubbard, I love Red Clay. Lately I've been listening to The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard, particularly the song The 7th Day. I was at Aardvark Books a few months ago and a gal there, Frida, was playing the album and I just kinda froze. Like a spider, I patiently perused the books, listening to the whole album. -

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Sat, July 30, 2005 - 9:51 PMHmm, just checked out 7th Day on iTunes. Definitely want to get it. I'm not diggin Hubbard's most recent work, but Red Clay is the second album I've gotten of his and I could easily listen to him all day. Listening to "First Flight" right now and it's so seriously smooth with the same build up as Red Clay. -

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Sun, July 31, 2005 - 2:56 PMBix Beiderbecke and the Chicago Cornets
by Scott Yanow
Not only does this superior double-LP set contain all of cornetist Bix Beiderbecke's recordings with The Wolverines in 1924 (much of which is classic), but it features him with The Sioux City Six and his Rhythm Jugglers (highlighted by the original version of "Davenport Blues"), the two titles cut by The Wolverines after Beiderbecke departed (with Jimmy McPartland in his spot) and seven performances by The Bucktown Five in 1924 (the recording debut of cornetist Muggsy Spanier). Collectors of '20s jazz should be familiar with most of this music, especially The Wolverines sides. Bix Beiderbecke, although only 21 years old at the time, already demonstrated the lyricism, inventiveness and beautiful tone that one associates with him.

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Wed, August 3, 2005 - 10:32 PMJust added another early favorite of mine, Stanley Turrentine's "Salt Song" album. This was a very melodic album for me back in high school or early college. (I tried finding the date the album was originally produced or released, but it's not coming up. iTunes, where I downloaded it from, only gives the CD re-issue date as 1997. I need to find a good source for dating albums and songs.) The gospel, blues, jazz cut "I Told Jesus" was the one that hip me to the album back then. I heard while attending a theatre presentation of A Raisin in the Sun. I'm not a religious a person, but that song does touch the soul. Seriously tense and moving. The longest cut, "Gibraltar" also cuts deep and moves. -

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Thu, August 4, 2005 - 6:47 PMFreddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" is a jazz classic. I remember as one of the first jazz CDs that really turned me on.
Same with Stantley Turrentine's "Salt Song."
I am still stuck on the same people in jazz: Pat Metheny Group, Terence Blanchard.
Just picked picked up The Malcolm X Jazz Suite by Terence Blanchard. Wow!
I don't know how I went all these years without hearing this amazing piece of music.
Flow is his latest CD and it is interesting, but may need time to grow on me.

Thu, August 4, 2005 - 8:01 PMpat metheny can be a gateway to some really great music. check out some of the people he's played with:
roy haynes, billy higgins, charlie haden, ornette coleman, jack de jonette, dave holland, nana vasconcelos, jaco pastorius, eberhard weber, gary burton, michael brecker...
btw, your last name wouldn't happen to be *mays* would it? (j/k!!)

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Thu, August 4, 2005 - 9:36 PMLyle, I'm feeling you about going so long without hearing certain songs. Searching stuff on iTunes Music store and a few jazz sites, I'm finding songs I haven't heard in years.
Because I haven't had an album player for like 20 years, I let an older colleague of mine keep a box full of LPs I had from high school. So it's like starting all over again for me.
Turrentine brought back so many memories.
As for Blanchard, he did a cut, I'm just learning, with Branford Marsalis, for Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues soundtrack--wish I could find that CD, I know I had it once.
I'm listening to samples from Blanchard's other songs right now. Tunes doesn't have the Malcolm X Jazz Suite, but I'm digging "Harvesting Dance," the three part song, "Flow." Definitely putting Blanchard on my wishlist. -

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 6:07 PMBakari: I have the soundtrack to "Mo Better Blues." The score was was written by Bill Lee, Spike's father, and Blanchard plays all the trumpet solos that we see Denzel Washington playing in the movie. After that film, Spike Lee brought in Blanchard to write the soundtracks to several of his subsequent films.
Most notable was Clockers and the 25 Hour, in my opinion.
And the Malcolm X Jazz Suite...well, the CD is very different from the music in the movie which is great in its own right.
The problem with ITunes and most online services is that they often just lack the best tracks by a certain artist.
How about "Little Sunflower" by Inner Shade, which is the instrumental version of the group Incognito, and a song written by Freddie Hubbard?
What about anything by Danilo Perez, one of the most talented pianists on this planet?
Or Steve Masakowski, a wonderful jazz guitarist from New Orleans?
What about Pat Metheny with Michael Brecker and Charlie Haden:
"Everyday (I Thank You)"?
Or how about "Nimbus" from Ralph Towner's "Solstice" album with Eberhard Weber and Jan Garbarek.
I think I Tunes is a great concept, but it's just a start for exploring music.
More exciting to me is internet radio, and now satellite radio.
I never would have discovered the group "Les Gammas" without internet streaming broadcasts. They are not jazz, but have a jazz element to them.
Kind of hard to describe.
But we are getting to what I failed to express in the first place.
Most jazz bores me. Except for artists who use jazz as a means of musical exploration, including those that are just simply exceptional in what they do:
Miles, Coltrane, Bill Evans.
Pat Metheny, Danilo Perez, Al DiMeola, Courtney Pine, Terence Blanchard, Ralph Towner, Eberhard Weber, Wayne Shorter, and perhaps Bill Frisell.
That's my short list.
and I am still listening to "The Way Up" and thinking if this isn't the future of jazz, then what is???? -
-
Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 7:14 PM<I never would have discovered the group "Les Gammas" without internet streaming broadcasts.>
had you come into the record store i used to work at (moby disc, r.i.p.) you would have been turned onto them--by me.
the problem with i-tunes is that it's not a record store. as much as i may be tilting against windmills, you'll never have the same experience finding music online that you could have going into a good shop. good shops have a great selection of classic music PLUS new stuff and a few oddities that the staff knows about. in a good shop, the staff is VERY knowledgeable and should be turning you onto new stuff all the time--either artists or albums that you either had no clue about or didn't know enough about.
for instance the biggest "bubbling under" dance act right now is "bugz in the attic" they've remixed MACY GRAY for crying out loud (on sony/bmg)--they're not on i-tunes. -

that's true (as an exrecord store clerk myself) but if you don't live near a good record store it sure could be handy. also, the whole being turned onto good music by a clerk thing works two ways; folks no longer need to worry about feeling dorky for purchasing their guilty pleasures from some 'hipster.' also, the celebrity playlists are as good as the celebrity who chooses them and the essentials section is getting better (full disclosure, i'm friends with the editor)
lately i've been using emusic.com which also has its problems but you *can* find mulatu astatke (check out yekermo sew):
www.emusic.com/album/10607/10607857.html
the song i just can’t get enough of lately (which isn't jazz but...) is the four tet remix of 'money folder' from the album madvillain -- which, for those who don't already know, was a collaboration between madlib (who supposed be coming out with his second album on blue note later this year) and mf doom. it *is* available on itunes but it's free here (check out the crazy break in the center):
www.stonesthrow.com/jukebox/.....t_remix.mp3
i’m so looking forward to the mf doom/danger mouse record, dangerdoom. -

T, this is no doubt true. But when I go to some of the record stores in my city, I don't get a chance to sample the music the way I do on iTunes. Again, it's a question of time for me. I can find something I like on Tunes and just download it.
But when I can--like tomorrow!--go to Dimple records and find good used CDs that might not be on Tunes or that I an get for less than 9 bucks I would pay on Tunes.

yes, but you can combine the experiences. if I see a record that looks interesting but I'm not exactly sure what it's gonna sound like, I put it on hold and then go online and see what information I can gather about it, and if I can hear some of it somewhere. Then if it's good I go buy it the next day. -

or...
you could talk to someone knowledgeable that works there and maybe listen at the shop...
am i the only person that's been to a good shop in the last 5 years? -

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 9:45 AMthose choices aren't mutually exclusive: i go to my favorite book store, aardvark, (at least twice a week, i'd say) *and* i check things out on amazon, plus i download books off audible; i go to my local video store, lost weekend, (in fact i play poker w/those folks regularly) *and* i subscribe to green cine; i just went to a going away party last weekend for my favorite record store clerk, byam, from aquarius (the fella that turned me on to mulatu astatk -- who you can hear at the beginning of this trailer: www.apple.com/trailers/fo...lowers.html) but i don't think he expects me to get all my good music from record store clerks.
i love talkin' music at a record store but i'm not going to limit myself -- i dunno what i'd do w/o dusty groove (www.dustygroove.com/) for instance, and there are about a half dozen music blogs that i check out each week -- some daily.
i will admit though that convenience rules my world and for that reason i find myself downloading more and more music, queueing up most of the dvds that i watch on green cine and, occasionally, ordering books online. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 3:36 PMi shop @ dustygroove as well--did even when i worked in a shop. the online choice does open the world up a bit, i agree. i am just heartbroken at all the shops that have closed and how people rarely talk about shops anymore--just sites (i don't just mean here--we're online, naturally people will talk about other sites.)
i was surprised at how much we sold of titles we just played in the shop.
music blogs--is that basically an online equiv of your favorite shopclerk telling you about the new thing s/he is excited about? i never understood that term. -
-
convenience
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 3:38 PM<i will admit though that convenience rules my world and for that reason i find myself downloading more and more music>
i wish there were more sites that had more than a 30sec clip. for most of the music i buy--that's just not enough to decide.
downloading is also minimally useful for me--i'm a vinyl guy. -
-
Re: convenience
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 7:11 PMemusic.com gives you the whole song at really crapy quality -- i.e. sounds like a tdk d.
i know what ya mean, sometimes the 30 secs are fade ins or studio chatter and then you're like... what the fucks the song sound like. frustrating

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 7:26 PM> am just heartbroken at all the shops that have closed and how people rarely talk about shops anymore--just sites <
yeah it was nice but i'm practicing non attachment. just the other day a friend and i were lamenting the demise of the mix tape (back when they were on tape.) we were talking about all the work and love that would go into fading, setting levels, covers, etc... *what-ever* we're a couple of knuckleheads; it *so* nice to kick out a mix in a day, as opposed to a week.
> music blogs... i never understood that term. <
blogs: web logs. music you already know... so, you know, folks write about music they love and then link you to examples. rather than give list my faves, here's a link to an mp3 aggregator:
www.mp3blogs.org/
thing is, music blogs are already becoming so last week; podcasting and video bloging are comin' in. and then? as long as i'm getting exposed to more music from more places then i'm happy. -
-
Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 12:35 AMi know what blogs are, i just wasn't sure if the music were taking the place of the text, or if the text were merely about music and they had links... thanks for clearing it up.
podcasting is more akin to doing a radio show. in fact, many shows are podcast. when i FINALLY start doing shows again (i keep threatening to) that's probably the way i'll do them--podcasts.
-
-
Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 12:57 AMpodcasts are great; you should do it. and a podcast with a website with links to the music it features do, in effect, take the place of the job a record store cleark used ta do.
that said, despite the fact that i only know *you* from online -- and i enjoy our discussions -- i do still prefer the face to face. -
-

Mon, August 8, 2005 - 1:30 AM<and a podcast with a website with links to the music it features do, in effect, take the place of the job a record store cleark used ta do.>
that's kind of intensive and since i'm not getting paid for this yet, i think what i'll do is what i did before--announce on the show, and post a playlist online after the show gets put up. links for a 2 hour show is a LOT of work. i'll probably put up a few links for people i want to push, but not for every track--call me lazy...

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 10:28 PMHey Lyle, thanks for the info. I hadn't researched the background on Mo' Better and Blanchard's involvement in it, so it's really good to know. I've copied and pasted your post in my notebook.
Also agree about iTunes. There are many tunes I've gone looking for and they weren't there. But for me it's a matter of connivence and time, so I check it out first for online music. I'm sure there are other sites that I could be visiting but just haven't made the time to discover them. The only other sites I find tunes l like are download.com and a garageband site which you can often find some nice funky work produced.
I haven't heard Metheny in a long while, but I've put his The Way Up album on my wish list. I'm wanting long and concert cuts these days, and Metheny definitely has three long cuts on this album that I would like to have.
I'm also into Miles, Coltrane, et. al, but like I said I'm growing my collection after many years of not buying CDs. So thanks to you and other for sharing your favorites.

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Tue, August 9, 2005 - 12:47 PMNot exactly this week but recently:
Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)
Sarah Vaughan
Tell Me All About It
Natalie Cole (which has a 'Corcovado' feel)
Classikhan
Chaka Khan
This one's still growing on me. I was excited about this collection because I liked her previous jazz outings -- 'I'll Be Around,' 'The End of a Love Affair', 'Don't Go to Strangers'. Until recently, I was unfamiliar with her earlier project 'Echoes of an Era'. I still love Chaka and still think she can do anything. But I'm also still a relatively new convert to jazz and prefer it on the smooth, mellow side. 'Classikhan' and 'Echoes' seem to be albums in the straight-ahead "tradional" style that I'm still learning to appreciate. -
-
Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?

Even though "Sketches is supposed to be the Miles classic, I like "On the Corner" better. But can't tell you why except that the latter is more funky. -

Sun, September 4, 2005 - 3:28 AMi LOVE "sketches..." but it scratches a much different itch than "on the corner." that whistling on there is really a nice touch. i'd say that "...corner" is much more earthy than "sketches..."

Re: added a bunch of stuff!
Sun, August 28, 2005 - 6:03 PMsameer: I heard that both those Wayne Shorter recordings are supposed to be great. A return to his acoustic roots.
I saw Wayne years ago at the Masonic Auditorium when he was in his electric period. It was a disappointing show, but I am not sure if it was the group, or the venue which is one of the worst places to ever see a concert.
I always thought that Kenny Kirkland was a very good keyboard player. I saw him live with Sting at the Greek theater. Branford Marsalis was also in the group. I am amazed that he has only one CD as a leader.
Kurt Rosenwinkel sounds very familiar. Has he worked with Danilo Perez?

some Kenny Garret albums have Kenny Kirkland, like Songbook and Black Hope. Also, Robert Hurst presents Robert Hurst has Kenny Kirkland as a sideman, and he sounds awesome.

Sun, September 4, 2005 - 2:11 PMSerge Chaloff's "Stairway to the Stars" from his album "Blue Serge" which was just added to the iTunes music store.
Nice lineup Sonny Clark, piano; Jo Jones, drums; and Leroy Vinnegar, bass.
I haven't seen the latest Penguine Guide but I seem to recall that this album was one of a handful that they awarded five stars with a crown to. (Anyone know if that's still the case?) -

Tue, October 18, 2005 - 9:22 PMRed Clay is a killer album. I was glad to see that Blue Note was re-releasing several things that haven't seen the light of day in quite some time.
You may already be familiar with Donald Byrd. If not, I highly recommend him. "A New Perspective" is a really nice mix of his trumpet style and utilizes a jazz gospel choir. "Blackjack" is probably my favorite though, with the title tune very bluesy and a great turn on modality in "Pentatonic".
Hubbard plays alot on Herbie Hancock's stuff from the same period, in mostly the same style. He's got a great style . . . not as showy as Lee Morgan and not as languid as Miles. He's a great bridge between hard bop and the more angular modal stuff from right after.

Wed, October 19, 2005 - 2:01 PMI just got this really great Ernie Henry record (Introducing Enie Henry). I discovered him through listening to Kenny Dorham. Ernie HJenry recorded three albums for Riverside in the late 1950's and died really young. One down two to go. -

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 12:48 PMBrad Mehldau ... I had to get something of his since I keep hearing about him. I chose the Live in Tokyo solo performance. All I've decided so far is that I also need to hear his trio work, because I think that's what I originally was drawn to.
Warmdaddy Anderson ... appearing with Wynton on the House of Tribes disc.
And technically I didn't have Monk in my CD/mp3 collection yet, so now I do with the Monk/Trane Carnegie Hall disc. That's definitely my favorite out of these 3.
And Bakari, if Inner Urge wasn't one of the Henderson discs you got, check it out. I consider that one a classic.

Re: What artist did you add to your collection this week?
Fri, January 6, 2006 - 3:14 PMDiscovered the music of Joe Henderson last night when I was browsing and downloading my 50 free music downloads from emusic. com. I've no doubt heard Henderson on the radio before, but I've never listened to entire album of his. He seems like a real pioneer in jazz. Seriously smooth and cutting edge. I got three of his album last night because of the download and I plan to get more.
If you plan to downloading music from emusic.com for the first time, email me so I can send you an invitation and get some credits.
