I sometimes think this is my favorite jazz album of all time. Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Ray Bryant (piano), Tommy Bryant (bass) and Charlie Persip (drums).
This is NOT a record review! I'm away from my main music collection these days and I find myself missing this record more than any other. ("Kind Of Blue" and a home-made collection of Blossom Dearie performances are high on the list.) This is one of the classics I suspect most people here have heard of, and a good many own. What sets this record apart for me is the high spirits (-Diz's vocal on "Sonny Side" is classic), the inventiveness, the extended jamming, and the attention to groove. (Was there ever a better version of "After Hours" than this one?) The guys had fun, blew like mad, but kept the groove strong and the listener not only amazed but entertained. It's impossible to feel bad listening to this record!
What are your favorite jazz albums? Not necessarily the ones that top critics polls but the records you play most often, the ones you just wear out? This is one of mine.
Tunes: Sunny Side of the Street * The Eternal Triangle * After Hours * I Know That You Know*

Re: Missing "Sonny Side Up"
Thu, December 7, 2006 - 9:27 AMWow!!!
Hey MARK... thnx 4 sharing ;-)
I absolutely LOVE that rekkid -- It's such a classic among horn players. The solos are practically perfect. I've transcribed most of 'em off this side. So melodic, It's hardly homework, more like a joy to analyze!
And Dizzy's scat (lyrical re-writing) on "Sunny Side of the Street" totally influenced one of my most prolific rap songs from back in the early 90's. Oh, the memories ;-)
I spin this gem during 'Boarding' on the Spirit of NY (my daily Harbor cruise in Manhattan). Guaranteed smiles.

Thu, December 7, 2006 - 5:22 PMSonny Side Up is one of my favorites. I love the soloing on "I Know That You Know". Killer album.
For me, it's up there with "Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" in terms of great recording sessions...

Wed, January 31, 2007 - 1:16 AMI've just been getting into Sonny Rollins recently, but Saxophone Collossus is already on my great albums list. I'll have to check out Sonny Side Up.
Another one that's recently blown me away has been the Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall CD that came out a little while ago. -

Re: Missing "Sonny Side Up"
Thu, February 8, 2007 - 10:44 AMIt's got such a great spirit about it. It's a blowing session but the arrangements are thoughtful---especially "Sunny Side of the Street" with Diz's altered lyrics--and the rhythm section is tight and groovy. I don't think I've ever heard a better version of "After Hours." -
