i was having a discussion w/someone over drinks the other day and we were disagreeing about the popularity of jazz in the 60s. i contended that it was on par with the other "black music" of the time (i.e., blues and r&b/soul) in terms of who (and how many) listened in the black community and the other person said that it was more "connoisseur" music (my word, not his.)
how does your memory hold up on that issue?

Re: who remembers the 60s?
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 8:40 PMI do! And I can absolutely guarantee you jazz was THE happening thing thing. Usually, when people talk about "the '60s," they mean 1967 to about 1973. But even in the early 60s, jazz was the vortex. The video (DVD) "Jazz On A Summer Day," a documentary shot at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1963, fleshes it all out. It was magnetic -- whites, blacks, everybody, were drawn to this very lively wellspring.

Re: who remembers the 60s?
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 9:45 PMsee, that's what i thought.
newport happened about a year before i was born... :(
i always think it's a drag when people talk about "the 60s" and really they just mean the latter part of the decade (i can remember from about 69 on...) so many important things happened long before 67 and some of it gets reflected in the music--malcolm x was dead, the cuban embargo began...
