Starting to hit the woodshed to expand my jazz vocal repertoire and wondering if anyone has any special tips for memorizing lyrics. I have a few that I already use. One that I have just figured out is to avoid trying to sing songs that I am only vaguely familiar with until I go over the lyrics and know exactly what they are to avoid committing to habit the wrong lyric that then has to be unlearned before proceeding. Another is to speak the lyric, then gradually speeding this up and then doing the same thing with a loud noise in the background to provide a distraction. Anyone have any other tips?

Re: memorization tips?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 1:20 AMI'm not a vocalist, but I own the vocal real book just to know the words to the standards; it helps me learn the overall structure and phrasing of a piece, and knowing the lyrics just makes the song that much more "real" to me. As for memorizing things, I need to use the brute force method of just playing the tune a million times. -

Re: memorization tips?
Wed, January 31, 2007 - 2:27 PMhi brian, thanks for the tip on phrasing. i have a real book also and need to use it more often. i have been using the "brute force" method, myself which seems to be working pretty well, since i am prone to rumination anyway, and tend to play "tapes" in my head; good for learning music, not so good at other times. another book a friend of mine uses is called "the standards real book." haven't bought it yet but it seems to use better chord selections. i'm looking to hook up with other musicians in the portland area for some fun. i'll message you and we can explore further.
